college experience

I remember my college days: Not. Fun. At. All.

I had to leave the house by 5:45 a.m. for an hour-long dusty drive to college. It was either too hot, too cold or too wet. And always enveloped in gas fumes. Then at the end of the day, it was the same drive back home. Eager to be done with the commute, I took 19 hours or more each semester, all the summer classes I could find and was done with college in less than three years. There was absolutely no room in my plan for fun, new experiences or goofing off.

I’m thankful that my daughter makes the time to explore and pursue her interests. In her pursuit of a career in Middle East securities and diplomacy, she immerses herself in everything Middle Eastern–food, movies, the study of Islam and Arabic, and every cultural lecture or performance that’s available to her.

Today she was so excited she could listen to these qawwali artists in person and then attended a Q&A with them. Wish I had taken the time to do stuff.
